## Quick answer

Dizziness when you stand up usually happens because your blood pressure dips for a moment as blood pools in your legs. A brief head rush that passes within a minute is common. If it keeps happening, lasts longer, or you faint, it can be low blood pressure on standing, POTS, dehydration or a medicine, and is worth checking.

## Key takeaways

- A head rush in the first seconds after standing is common, especially in teenagers, and usually passes within a minute.
- Orthostatic hypotension is a blood pressure drop of 20/10 mmHg or more within 3 minutes of standing.
- POTS is different: the heart rate rises by 30 beats a minute or more (40 for ages 12 to 19) within 10 minutes of standing and stays up, without that blood pressure drop.
- Getting up slowly, drinking enough fluids and tensing your leg muscles can help. Don’t stop a medicine on your own.
- See a GP or doctor if it keeps happening or you faint. Call 999 or 911 for the emergency signs listed below.

Feeling dizzy or lightheaded when you stand up is common, and it is not usually serious. [\[1\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-1) It happens because your blood pressure dips as you stand, so less blood reaches your brain for a moment. [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2) [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3)

If it happens often, lasts more than a minute or makes you faint, it is worth finding out why. This guide covers the common causes, what helps, when to see a doctor and when to call for help.

## Why do I get dizzy when I stand up?

When you stand up, gravity pulls blood down into your legs and belly. Less blood flows back to your heart, so your blood pressure drops for a moment. [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3) Your body normally corrects this within seconds. If it doesn’t correct it quickly enough, you feel lightheaded.

Symptoms usually last less than a few minutes and ease when you sit or lie down. [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3) [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-4) They can include:

- lightheadedness or feeling faint
- blurred vision, or seeing black or grey spots
- feeling weak or sick
- confusion
- fainting [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2) [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3)

Heat makes it worse, including a hot shower or bath. [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-4) It is often worse in the morning, because blood pressure is usually at its lowest when you wake up. [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-4) If you feel dizzy only when you are upright, the cause is probably not your ears. [\[18\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-18)

## Is a head rush when you stand up normal?

A short head rush is usually normal. Doctors call it initial orthostatic hypotension: a quick, steep drop in blood pressure in the first seconds after you stand. [\[5\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-5)

Many people sometimes feel lightheaded or see black spots about 7 to 10 seconds after standing up. It usually clears within 20 to 30 seconds. [\[7\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-7) It is most common in teenagers, especially during a growth spurt, and in young adults. [\[5\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-5) [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-6)

The drop is too quick for a normal blood pressure cuff to catch. [\[5\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-5) Standing up more slowly is often enough to stop it. [\[5\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-5) If you faint, or the dizziness lasts longer than a minute, see a GP or doctor.

## What causes dizziness when standing up?

How long the dizziness lasts, and what comes with it, are the best clues.

| Possible cause | Clues |
| --- | --- |
| Head rush (initial orthostatic hypotension) | Starts in the first seconds after standing and is gone within a minute [\[5\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-5) [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-6) |

If it happens after meals, our guide to [feeling tired after eating](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating) explains low blood pressure after meals and how a doctor checks for it.

## Is it dizziness or vertigo?

“Dizzy” can mean two different things. Lightheadedness feels like you might faint. Vertigo feels like you or the room is spinning. [\[15\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-15) [\[16\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-16)

Dizziness on standing is usually lightheadedness. Vertigo that starts when you tip your head up or down, lie down, turn over or sit up in bed is often benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It usually lasts less than a minute, and a doctor can often treat it during an appointment. [\[17\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-17)

## Is dizziness when standing a sign of POTS?

It can be. With POTS (postural tachycardia syndrome), your heart rate goes up after you stand, which often makes you dizzy or lightheaded. [\[8\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-8) Doctors look for a lasting rise of 30 beats a minute or more within 10 minutes of standing (40 or more for ages 12 to 19), not just a brief spike, without a lasting drop in blood pressure, and symptoms for at least 3 months. [\[10\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-10)

If your blood pressure stays down by 20 or more (top number) or 10 or more (bottom number) within 3 minutes of standing, that is orthostatic hypotension, not POTS. [\[5\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-5) [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-6) A brief drop in the first seconds, a head rush, does not rule out POTS. [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-6) POTS is estimated to affect 0.1% to 1% of people. [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-6)

To check, a GP may measure your blood pressure and heart rate before and after you stand up. A specialist may use a tilt table test. [\[8\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-8) You can record your heart rate at home with our [free standing test timer](https://junocompanion.com/trackers/poor-mans-tilt-table-test) and take the results to your doctor. ## How do you stop getting dizzy when you stand up?

### If you feel dizzy as you stand:

- Sit or lie down straight away. If you can, lie down and raise your legs until you feel better. [\[8\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-8) [\[13\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-13)
- If you can’t lie down, cross your legs, rock up and down on your toes, clench your buttocks and tummy muscles, or clench your fists. [\[8\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-8) [\[13\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-13)

Don’t drive, climb a ladder or use machinery while you feel dizzy. [\[1\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-1)

These steps can stop it happening as often:

- **Get up slowly.** Go from lying to sitting to standing, and sit on the edge of the bed for a minute before you stand. [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2) [\[11\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-11)
- **Move your legs first.** Flex your calves, or straighten and bend your legs, before you get up. [\[11\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-11) [\[12\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-12)
- **Have something sturdy to hold** when you stand. [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-4)
- **Drink plenty of fluids,** especially water. If you are on a fluid limit because of a heart condition, check with your doctor how much to drink. [\[1\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-1) [\[19\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-19)
- **Go easy on alcohol.** [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2) [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3)
- **Avoid very hot baths and showers.** [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-4)
- **Eat smaller meals** if it happens after eating. [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2)
- **Raise the head of your bed** slightly. [\[8\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-8) [\[11\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-11)

A GP may suggest support stockings, which aren’t suitable for everyone. [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2) [\[12\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-12) Only add extra salt if a doctor advises it, because too much salt can raise blood pressure too far. [\[11\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-11)

If a medicine might be the cause, don’t stop it on your own. A GP can check whether to change the medicine or the dose. [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2) [\[20\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-20)

## When should you see a doctor about dizziness when standing up?

See a GP or doctor if:

- you keep getting dizzy when you stand up, or it keeps coming back [\[1\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-1) [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-2) [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-4)
- you have fainted, even for a few seconds [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3) [\[13\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-13)
- it started after a new medicine [\[1\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-1)
- it happens at times that could be dangerous, such as while driving [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3)
- it comes with other symptoms, such as changes to your pulse, headaches, double vision or numbness [\[1\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-1)

A doctor may check your blood pressure lying down and again standing up. [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-4) [\[12\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-12) They may also do blood tests, for example for anaemia or low blood sugar, and a heart tracing (ECG). [\[11\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-11)

## What should you write down for your doctor?

Keep a short record of each episode: when it happened, how long it lasted and what you were doing. [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-3) Write down:

- whether you were lying, sitting or standing, and how long after standing it started
- how long it lasted, and what helped
- what came with it: blurred vision, a racing heart, sweating, feeling sick or fainting
- what came before it: a hot shower, a big meal, alcohol, a bad night or not drinking enough
- any new medicine or dose change
- your heart rate or blood pressure, if you measured it

The free [flare episode log](https://junocompanion.com/free-resources-and-worksheets/flare-episode-log) gives you space for each episode. If writing is hard, you can [tell Juno by voice](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/track-symptoms-by-voice-with-juno) or text instead. Juno logs it for you and turns your notes into a dated summary to take to your doctor.

## When is dizziness when standing up an emergency?

A head rush that passes is not an emergency. Get help straight away if dizziness or fainting comes with any of these signs.

### Call 999 (UK) or 911 (US) if someone:

- is not breathing
- faints and can’t be woken up within 1 minute
- has not fully recovered, or has difficulty with speech or movement
- has chest pain or a pounding, fluttering or irregular heartbeat
- has seriously hurt themselves, or is shaking or jerking (having a seizure)
- fainted while exercising or while lying down
- suddenly becomes confused
- suddenly has a face that has dropped on one side
- suddenly can’t lift both arms, or has weakness or numbness in one arm
- suddenly has slurred speech, or loses sight in one or both eyes
- has a sudden, severe headache

One of these signs is enough. Stroke signs that stop after a short time still need help straight away. Don’t drive yourself to A&E or the emergency room. [\[13\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-13) [\[14\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-14) [\[21\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/dizzy-when-standing-up#source-21)

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do I get dizzy when I stand up?

When you stand, gravity pulls blood into your legs and belly, so your blood pressure dips for a moment and less blood reaches your brain. Your body usually corrects this within seconds. Dehydration, heat, alcohol, some medicines, low blood pressure on standing and POTS can all make it happen more often or last longer.

### Why do I see black when I stand up?

Seeing black or grey spots a few seconds after standing is usually a head rush: a short, steep drop in blood pressure. It typically clears within 20 to 30 seconds. Standing up more slowly often helps. If it keeps happening, lasts longer than a minute or you faint, see a GP or doctor.

### Is it normal to get dizzy when you stand up?

A brief head rush now and then is common and usually harmless, especially in teenagers. It is worth seeing a doctor if it happens often, lasts more than a minute, makes you faint, or started after a new medicine. These can point to low blood pressure on standing, POTS or another cause.

### How do I stop getting dizzy when I stand up?

Get up slowly, sitting on the edge of the bed for a minute first. Flex your calves before you stand, drink plenty of fluids, go easy on alcohol and avoid very hot showers. If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down straight away. Don’t stop a medicine or add extra salt without asking a doctor.

### Can dehydration make you dizzy when you stand up?

Yes. Dehydration lowers the amount of blood in your body, which makes your blood pressure more likely to drop when you stand. Even mild dehydration can cause dizziness, weakness and tiredness. Hot weather, vomiting, diarrhoea and water tablets (diuretics) can all cause it. Drinking more water often helps.

### Is dizziness when standing a sign of POTS?

It can be. With POTS, your heart rate rises by 30 beats a minute or more (40 for ages 12 to 19) within 10 minutes of standing and stays up, without a lasting drop in blood pressure. A brief spike is not enough. A GP can check your heart rate and blood pressure lying and standing, and refer you to a specialist if needed.

### When should I worry about dizziness when standing up?

See a GP if it keeps happening or you have fainted. Call 999 in the UK or 911 in the US if someone faints and can’t be woken within a minute, has chest pain or an irregular heartbeat, has a seizure, faints while lying down or exercising, suddenly becomes confused, or has any stroke sign, such as a drooping face or slurred speech.
