## Quick answer

Feeling tired after eating, often called a food coma, is common and usually harmless. Big meals and the body’s natural afternoon dip are the usual causes. If it comes with dizziness, a racing heart, shaking or sweating, or happens after most meals, POTS, low blood pressure or blood sugar changes are worth checking with a doctor.

## Key takeaways

- Some sleepiness after eating is normal: the afternoon dip happens even if you skip lunch, and a heavy meal makes it worse.
- Timing is a clue: low blood pressure after meals shows up within 2 hours, a blood sugar dip 2 to 5 hours after eating.
- In a survey of 8,919 people with POTS, 53% said high-carbohydrate meals made their symptoms worse.
- See a GP if you don’t have diabetes and get shaking, sweating, a fast heartbeat or confusion after meals.

Most people feel a bit slow after a big meal. Doctors call it postprandial somnolence; most people call it a food coma. It usually isn’t a sign of anything serious. [\[1\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-1)

But if every meal costs you the afternoon, or the tiredness comes with dizziness, a pounding heart or shaking, it’s worth looking closer. This guide covers the everyday causes first, then the medical ones.

## Is it normal to feel tired after eating?

Yes. Many people feel sleepier in the early afternoon. This dip happens even when people skip lunch and don’t know what time it is, so it is partly your body clock. A high-carbohydrate lunch makes it worse. [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-2)

Meal size matters too. In a driving simulator study, drivers who had slept only 5 hours drifted out of their lane more often after a heavy 922-calorie lunch than after a light 305-calorie one. [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-3)

Fat may play a part as well. In a small study, people felt more tired 3 hours after a high-fat, low-carbohydrate breakfast than after a low-fat, high-carbohydrate one. [\[4\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-4)

You may have heard that blood rushes from your brain to your gut after a meal. That is unlikely, because the body keeps blood flow to the brain steady. Some researchers think gut hormones and nerve signals that act on sleep centres in the brain are a better explanation. [\[5\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-5)

## What can make you tired after eating?

When the tiredness starts, and what comes with it, are the best clues to the cause.

| Possible cause | When it tends to start | What often comes with it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Food coma and the afternoon dip | After bigger meals, often in the early afternoon | Sleepiness and slower thinking [\[2\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-2) [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-3) |
| POTS | After meals, especially high-carbohydrate ones | Dizziness, palpitations, brain fog, feeling worse standing up [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-6) [\[7\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-7) |
| Low blood pressure after meals (postprandial hypotension) | Within 2 hours of eating | Dizziness, weakness, falls or fainting [\[8\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-8) [\[9\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-9) |
| A blood sugar dip (reactive hypoglycaemia) | 2 to 5 hours after eating | Hunger, shaking, sweating, palpitations [\[10\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-10) [\[12\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-12) |
| High blood sugar or undiagnosed diabetes | Comes on gradually | Feeling very thirsty, peeing a lot, blurred vision [\[13\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-13) |
| Late dumping syndrome, after stomach or oesophagus surgery | 1 to 3 hours after eating | Shakiness, sweating, light-headedness, trouble concentrating [\[14\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-14) |
| Coeliac disease | Symptoms often come and go | Tummy pain, bloating, diarrhoea, extreme tiredness [\[15\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-15) |

If you feel tired all day, not just after meals, the NHS lists other common causes: not enough sleep, stress, low mood, hormonal changes, some illnesses and some medicines. [\[16\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-16)

## Is tiredness after eating a POTS symptom?

It can be. The NHS lists eating, especially carbohydrates like white bread, pasta and rice, among the things that can make POTS symptoms worse. [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-6)

In an online survey of 8,919 people who said a doctor had diagnosed them with POTS, 53% said high-carbohydrate meals made their symptoms worse, and 43% said the same about high-fat meals. The answers were self-reported and the diagnoses weren’t checked. [\[7\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-7)

A GP or specialist may suggest eating small meals with fewer carbohydrates and drinking more fluids. [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-6) If you have POTS, our [POTS flare-ups guide](https://junocompanion.com/blog/flares-and-triggers/pots-flare-ups) covers other triggers, and you can time a [standing test at home](https://junocompanion.com/trackers/poor-mans-tilt-table-test) to show your doctor.

## Can low blood pressure after meals make you tired?

Yes. Postprandial hypotension is a fall in systolic blood pressure (the top number) of 20 mmHg or more within 2 hours of starting a meal. It can cause dizziness, weakness, falls and fainting. [\[8\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-8) [\[9\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-9)

Most of the research is in older adults. A 2024 review of 13 studies found it in about 4 in 10 older people. [\[9\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-9)

To check for it, a doctor can measure your blood pressure before a meal and then every 10 to 30 minutes for 2 hours afterwards. [\[9\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-9)

## Could blood sugar make you tired after eating?

A late dip is possible. Reactive hypoglycaemia is low blood sugar 2 to 5 hours after eating. [\[10\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-10) There is no agreed way to define or test for it yet. [\[11\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-11)

Low blood sugar can make you feel hungry, shaky, sweaty, tired or weak, and confused, and give you palpitations. It is rare in people who don’t have diabetes. [\[12\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-12)

High blood sugar can also make you feel weak or tired, along with feeling very thirsty, peeing a lot and blurred vision. The NHS says to speak to a GP if you have these symptoms and haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes. [\[13\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-13)

After surgery on the stomach or oesophagus, late dumping syndrome can cause tiredness, shakiness and sweating 1 to 3 hours after a meal. [\[14\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-14)

## How can you stop feeling tired after eating?

There’s no single fix, and you don’t need strict food rules. These are the changes with evidence behind them:

- **Eat smaller meals.** A light lunch caused less sleepiness than a heavy one in the driving study. [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-3)
- **If you have POTS, try fewer carbohydrates and more fluids.** This is what the NHS suggests. [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-6)
- **Move a little after eating if you can.** Short bouts of light walking, instead of sitting for long stretches, lower the rise in blood sugar after meals, which may help if blood sugar swings play a part. [\[17\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-17)
- **Keep regular sleep.** The afternoon dip is worse after a short night. [\[3\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-3)
- **Go easy on alcohol.** The NHS advises not drinking too much if you are often tired. [\[16\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-16)

If you live with a condition that limits your energy, a meal can use up some of it. Planning a rest after bigger meals can help; our [spoon theory guide](https://junocompanion.com/blog/pacing-and-energy/spoon-theory) explains how to plan around limited energy.

## When should you see a doctor about tiredness after eating?

See a GP if:

- you don’t have diabetes and get shaking, sweating, a fast heartbeat or confusion after meals [\[12\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-12)
- you feel very thirsty, pee a lot or have blurred vision and haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes [\[13\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-13)
- you get dizzy or have a racing heart when you stand up, or you have fainted [\[6\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-6) [\[18\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-18)
- you’ve felt tired for a few weeks and don’t know why, or it affects your daily life [\[16\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-16)
- you feel tired and have other symptoms, such as weight loss or mood changes [\[16\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-16)

Tell them if you’ve had surgery on your stomach or oesophagus, or if you also get tummy pain, bloating or diarrhoea. These can point to dumping syndrome or coeliac disease. [\[14\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-14) [\[15\]](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/tired-after-eating#source-15)

## What should you write down before your appointment?

A short note after each episode is enough. You don’t need to weigh food or keep a perfect diary. Write down:

- what you ate, and roughly how much
- what time you ate
- how long until the tiredness started, and how long it lasted
- whether you were lying, sitting or standing
- what came with it: dizziness, a racing heart, shaking, sweating, brain fog or nausea

Our free [food and symptom log](https://junocompanion.com/free-resources-and-worksheets/food-symptom-log) gives you three days of meals with columns for symptoms and the delay before they start.

If writing it down is too much, you can just tell Juno about the meal and how you feel, by voice or text. Juno logs it for you and turns it into a dated summary to take to your doctor.

## When is tiredness after eating an emergency?

Feeling sleepy after a meal is not an emergency on its own. Get help straight away if it comes with any of these.

### Call 999 (UK) or 911 (US) if someone:

- faints and can’t be woken up within 1 minute
- faints and has chest pain or a pounding, fluttering or irregular heartbeat
- is shaking or jerking (having a seizure)
- may have very low blood sugar and is not responding normally or is unconscious
- may have high blood sugar and feels very drowsy or confused, is breathing fast or is being sick

Don’t drive yourself to A&E or the emergency room. Ask someone to drive you or call for an ambulance. ## Frequently asked questions

### Why do I get so tired after eating?

Usually because of meal size and the natural dip in alertness in the early afternoon, which happens even if you skip lunch. Heavy meals make it worse. If the tiredness comes with dizziness, a racing heart, shaking or sweating, POTS, low blood pressure after meals or a blood sugar dip are worth checking.

### What is it called when you get tired after eating?

The medical name is postprandial somnolence; most people call it a food coma. It describes ordinary sleepiness after a meal and is usually harmless. A drop in blood pressure after meals is called postprandial hypotension, and a blood sugar dip a few hours after eating is called reactive hypoglycaemia.

### Is feeling tired after eating a sign of diabetes?

Not on its own. High blood sugar can make you feel weak or tired, but it usually also makes you very thirsty, pee a lot or have blurred vision. If you have these symptoms and haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes, the NHS advises speaking to a GP.

### Is tiredness after eating a POTS symptom?

It can be. The NHS lists eating, especially carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta and rice, as something that can make POTS symptoms worse. In a survey of 8,919 people with POTS, 53% said high-carbohydrate meals made their symptoms worse. Smaller meals with fewer carbohydrates may help.

### How do I stop feeling tired after eating?

Try smaller meals, and fewer carbohydrates if you have POTS. Short bouts of light walking instead of long sitting lower the rise in blood sugar after meals, and regular sleep makes the afternoon dip smaller. Go easy on alcohol. If nothing helps or other symptoms come with the tiredness, see a GP.

### Can low blood sugar after eating make you tired?

Yes. Reactive hypoglycaemia is a blood sugar dip 2 to 5 hours after a meal, and low blood sugar can make you feel tired or weak, shaky, sweaty and hungry. It is rare in people without diabetes. If you get these symptoms and don’t have diabetes, see a GP.
