## What is Hashimoto's thyroiditis?

Hashimoto's thyroiditis, also called chronic lymphocytic or autoimmune thyroiditis, is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Over time the thyroid can stop making enough hormone, which is called hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US and the UK. It is 4 to 10 times more common in women than men and usually starts between the ages of 30 and 50.

### Symptoms

Many people have no symptoms at first. As thyroid hormone levels fall, common symptoms include tiredness, feeling cold, gradual weight gain, constipation, dry skin and hair, brain fog, low mood, aches, and heavy or irregular periods. Some people notice a painless swelling at the front of the neck, called a goitre. Symptoms build slowly and overlap with many other conditions. [See the full Hashimoto's symptoms checklist](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/hashimotos-symptoms), including early signs, flare-ups and when to get help.

### How it is diagnosed

Diagnosis uses blood tests. A raised TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) with a low free T4 means the thyroid is underactive. TPO antibodies, found in most people with Hashimoto's, show the cause is autoimmune. Raised antibodies with a normal TSH usually means regular checks rather than treatment.

### Treatment

If the thyroid is underactive, levothyroxine replaces the missing hormone, usually for life. TSH is rechecked 6 to 8 weeks after starting or changing the dose. The tablet works best on an empty stomach, away from coffee, calcium and iron. No special diet has been shown to treat Hashimoto's; [our Hashimoto's diet guide](https://junocompanion.com/blog/treatments-and-medication/hashimotos-diet) covers what the evidence says about gluten, selenium and iodine.

Quick answer

## What is the best way to track Hashimoto's symptoms?

The best way to track Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is to separate symptoms by domain, log what changed when it happened, and connect each entry to triggers, treatment, and daily impact. Juno turns low-effort voice or text check-ins into a timeline your endocrinologist or GP can review.

- Symptom timing
- Possible triggers
- Treatment response
- Appointment questions

### What should your Hashimoto's symptom tracker record?

A strong Hashimoto's Thyroiditis tracker records separate symptom domains, timing, triggers, treatment context, and functional impact. For Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, the most useful entries are fatigue, cold intolerance, weight changes, cognitive symptoms (brain fog), mood.

### How does tracking Hashimoto's Thyroiditis help at appointments?

Tracking gives your endocrinologist or GP a cleaner timeline than memory can provide. It turns scattered day-to-day notes into onset, duration, recovery, possible triggers, medication context, and the questions you need answered.

### When should new Hashimoto's Thyroiditis symptoms be escalated?

New, sudden, severe, or worsening symptoms should be shared with your clinical team promptly, especially when they affect daily safety, function, medication response, or a body system your care team is already monitoring. Juno helps you record what changed, but your clinician decides what needs urgent care.

### What should you log?

- Fatigue
- Cold intolerance
- Weight changes
- Cognitive symptoms (brain fog)
- Mood
- Hair, skin, and nail changes
- Levothyroxine adherence and timing
- Sleep quality

### What patterns matter?

- Symptom shifts in the weeks after a dose change
- Sleep quality vs daytime fatigue
- Cycle-related fluctuation in symptoms
- Stress periods aligning with symptom worsening

### What should you bring?

- Symptom domain summary (energy, cognition, weight, temperature)
- Levothyroxine adherence and timing notes
- Lab / dose change history with subjective response
- Functional impact on work and sleep
- Specific questions for your endocrinologist or GP

Tracker comparison

## What makes Juno different from a generic tracker?

Generic trackers often flatten complex symptoms into one daily score. Juno keeps the details separate enough for pattern recognition and clear enough for appointments.

| Need | Generic tracker | Juno |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Symptom domains | One slider | Energy, cognition, weight, temperature tracked separately |
| Dose-change response | Recall at the next appointment | 4–8 week response window made visible |
| Adherence + timing | Not tracked | Levothyroxine dose and timing logged |
| Cycle context | Not connected | Cycle phase visible alongside symptom shifts |
| Endo / GP prep | Verbal recall | Page summary timed to the visit |

Key benefits

## Four ways Juno makes life with Hashimoto's a little easier.

### Spot Hashimoto's Thyroiditis flare patterns sooner

Track shifts in fatigue, cold intolerance, weight changes, cognitive symptoms (brain fog) before they blur together by the next appointment.

### Track symptoms automatically

Tell Juno what happened in plain language and it turns that into a clear symptom timeline without extra admin.

### Protect your energy

See what tends to push you past baseline so you can pace the week with less guesswork around hashimoto's thyroiditis.

### Show up prepared

Turn daily notes, symptom changes, and context into something your endocrinologist or GP can actually use.

Features

## Built for the everyday reality of managing Hashimoto's.

Juno is designed to take some of the admin load off with calmer check-ins, clearer pattern tracking, and support that stays useful between appointments.

Flare support

### Manage flares

Keep one calm place for what changed, what felt worse, and what might have triggered it so hashimoto's thyroiditis flare days do not blur together.

- Track what changed and when
- Keep notes in plain language
- Spot context around tougher days

FAQs

## A few common questions.

### What is Hashimoto's thyroiditis?

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. It is the most common cause of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Many people have no symptoms at first; it is diagnosed with blood tests for TSH, free T4 and thyroid antibodies.

### Is Hashimoto's the same as hypothyroidism?

No. Hashimoto's is the cause and hypothyroidism is the result. You can have Hashimoto's with normal thyroid levels, and hypothyroidism can have other causes, such as thyroid surgery or some medicines. [Read more about Hashimoto's symptoms](https://junocompanion.com/blog/symptom-tracking/hashimotos-symptoms).

### What does a high TSH level mean?

TSH rises when the thyroid is not making enough hormone, because the pituitary gland is signalling it to work harder. A high TSH with a low free T4 means overt hypothyroidism; a high TSH with a normal free T4 is called subclinical hypothyroidism.

### What does a TPO antibody test show?

TPO antibodies attack thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme in the thyroid. They are found in most people with Hashimoto's, so a positive test points to an autoimmune cause. They are also found in some people whose thyroid works normally, so TSH is what guides treatment.

### Why track symptoms when labs already exist?

Labs are a snapshot; symptoms describe how you actually feel. Logging symptoms, levothyroxine timing and missed doses across the 6 to 8 weeks after a dose change gives your doctor more to work with than a single TSH result.

### Does Juno diagnose hypothyroidism?

No. Diagnosis is clinical and based on blood tests. Juno helps you record symptoms and treatment notes; your care team interprets them.
