Juno is a health assistant app for people living with chronic illness. Like every app that uses AI, some of our services run in data centers that use electricity and water, and people ask us what that costs the climate. If Juno helps you manage your health, you shouldn't feel guilty for using it. The cost still isn't zero, but working it out is our responsibility, not yours.
Quick answer. Every month, we calculate the carbon footprint of the AI and cloud services that run Juno at ~8 metric tons of CO2e. SharedGenes, the company behind Juno, sponsors initiatives to offset this impact by a factor of two, to ensure we're creating a lasting positive impact on the environment.

How Much Energy and Water Does Juno Use?
When you message Juno, the request goes to AI models that run in data centers. Those servers draw electricity, and many data centers also use water to cool them. Juno's database, memory, and voice calls run on cloud servers as well.
Our AI services increasingly run on chips that use closed-loop water cooling, and we expect our impact on water use to decrease to zero over the next few years. We're super excited about this progress, but in the meantime, we're committed to funding clean water projects globally to offset what we currently use.
In order to calculate our carbon footprint, we use industry standard calculations based on what we pay our upstream service providers. This is a standard method when direct data isn't available, but because we're not satisfied with the margin of error here, we're happy to offset double our largest estimate.
You may have seen estimates of the energy or water behind a single ChatGPT prompt. Those numbers come from other companies' models, measured in different ways, so we don't borrow them to describe Juno.
