How the spoon calculator works
Spoon theory, created by Christine Miserandino in 2003, pictures energy as a handful of spoons. Every task costs some, and when they are gone, they are gone. The calculator does the counting in four steps.
- Budget: your energy rating times 2.4, rounded to a whole spoon. Energy 5 gives 12 spoons; energy 8 gives 19.
- Adjustments: short sleep, lower heart rate variability (HRV) or a raised resting heart rate make each activity cost more. When more than one applies, the multipliers multiply, and costs round to the nearest quarter spoon.
- Activities: each one starts from an example cost you can change. A rest break gives one spoon back.
- Reserve: one spoon is kept back for the unexpected. If the plan goes over budget, it is marked as a crash risk so you can move, shorten or drop something.
| When | Activity costs |
|---|---|
| Slept 6 to 7 hours | ×1.10 |
| Slept 5 to 6 hours | ×1.25 |
| Slept under 5 hours | ×1.30 |
| Heart rate variability (HRV) lower than usual | ×1.20 |
| Resting heart rate more than 10 bpm above usual | ×1.15 |
| Activity | Spoons |
|---|---|
| Getting dressed | 1 |
| Shower | 2 |
| Cooking a simple meal | 2 |
| Cooking a full meal | 3 |
| Seeing friends | 3 |
| Work, shopping or an appointment | 4 |
| Rest break | 1 back |
For example, you rate your energy 6 after 5.5 hours of sleep. Your budget is 14 spoons (6 × 2.4 = 14.4, rounded) and every cost is multiplied by 1.25: getting dressed costs 1.25, a shower 2.5, a simple meal 2.5 and an appointment 5. With one rest break, that is 10.25 spoons planned and 3.75 left, including your reserve.
Where the numbers come from
The starting rule and the multipliers come from Juno’s technical white paper, Personalized pacing with Juno (version 1.0, 21 September 2026). In the paper, the budget and the cost of each activity go on to learn from a person’s own records. Those learning parts are a development prototype, not a clinical tool, and this calculator does not use them: it applies only the fixed starting rule and the published multipliers.
It is a planning aid, not medical advice. A higher budget is never an instruction to do more, and spoons you have left do not have to be spent. If your energy or symptoms are changing, talk to your clinician. To see how pacing works in the app, read energy pacing with Juno.
Questions
How many spoons do I have each day?
There is no fixed number. In Christine Miserandino’s original story she had 12. This calculator starts from your energy rating: energy times 2.4, rounded, so energy 5 gives 12 spoons and energy 3 gives 7. Change the rating when your day changes.
How many spoons does a shower cost?
Here a shower starts at 2 spoons and costs more after a short night or when your wearable shows strain, for example 2.5 after 5 to 6 hours of sleep. Your own cost may differ; sitting on a shower stool can make it cost less.
What happens if I go over my spoon budget?
The calculator marks the plan as a crash risk. Going over means borrowing from tomorrow, and for some people, especially with ME/CFS or long COVID, symptoms can get worse a day or two later. Move something, make it smaller or add a rest break.
Does a bigger budget mean I should do more?
No. The budget is an estimate to plan within, not a target. Spoons left over do not have to be spent, and a higher budget is never an instruction to do more. The calculator is a planning aid, not medical advice.
Is there a spoon theory app?
Yes. Juno is a free-to-download app for iOS and Android built on spoon theory. A daily energy check-in sets your spoon budget, and Juno estimates what each task costs and marks crash risk when the plan goes over.
Is my plan saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent to Juno and there is no account, so the plan is gone when you close the page. Copy or print it if you want to keep it.

Let Juno do the counting
A quick energy check-in sets your spoon budget. Tell Juno what you need to do and it estimates each task’s cost and marks crash risk before the day runs over.
